Seven accused members of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
